Based on a play based on an Aldous Huxley’s book based on a real event. The Devils may claim to be based on a true story, the true story is somewhat diluted. But we all know that real life never happen like in a Ken Russell movie anyway.
It tells the Story of Urbain Grandier, who was executed in Loudun in 1634 and who really was a lewd priest who joyously used his little genital appendage in a woman’s convent, probably to the delight of the young nuns. The true story, anyway, is unknown.
Ken Russell is a particular director with a distinctive style that is not for everyone. The Devils is one of my favorite by mixing surreals imagery, historical facts and nunsploitation.

I went through a period where I watched almost everything Ken Russell ever made. I recall the films I liked the most were Altered States, Lair of the White Worm and The Witches. The witches from about the same time, I think, he did a film version of D.H. Lawrence’s Women in Love, also with Oliver Reed. His films from this time were less abstract than they would later become. I recall I loved this film but have not seen it in over ten years. Time to find it and check it out once more.
In my last comment I called the film The witches but it is The Devils of course. Oops.
The Devils was one of Ken Russell’s better films, along with Altered States and Lair of the Whit Worm. But this film is earlier, from the same time he did Women in Love, also with Oliver Reed. I need to find this online and promote it myself. I loved this film but simply forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder.
I dont recall much of Altered States. I watched it only once, several years ago, in a period of my life where I was also on a Altered State most of the time. That may explain it!
The devils is my favorite, along with the Lair of the White Worm and Salome.
I really appreciate Russell strangely surreal style.
